Bio
Born and raised in Lafayette, Indiana, Tara Nelson is a life long resident of the new center of Indiana's U.S. District 4. Tara's family has lived in Lafayette for generations. She is proud to call Lafayette home. She has a daughter, Alexandria, who enjoys sports, music, and Girl Scouts. Tara has been independent since her mother passed away of breast cancer when she was 13.
Tara attended Tippecanoe County Schools: Hershey Elementary, East Tipp Middle School, and graduated from Harrison High School in 2000. She attended Professional Careers Institute (now Kaplan College) in Indianapolis and worked for many years as a Technical Writer consultant at Eli Lilly Tippecanoe Laboratories (now Evonik). She went on to work at Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (now Chemtura) in West Lafayette. After being a full time employee in Global Supply Chain Purchasing for only six months, Tara was laid off after an acquisition. She returned to consulting work with Bucher and Christian IT Consulting (now BCforward) in 2005 in Indianapolis. She quickly advanced in her IT career becoming a Center of Excellence Change Management Analyst, then was promoted to Test Lead in 2008, and then promoted to Project Manager in 2010. She became Project Manager Professional, PMP, certified in 2011 through Project Management Institute.
Tara has been active in the community for many years. She has been involved with several annual American Cancer Society - Relay for Life events, United Way campaigns, and has served as President of Southaven Home Owner's Association for six years. She is also a member of Lafayette Chamber of Commerce - Tippy Connect, a ten-year member of Indiana Farm Bureau, a registered adult Girl Scout, and a member of the Lafayette Eastern Star.
Her interest in politics came many years ago through her hardships as a single parent, hardships with finding full-time employment with a wage to support her family, not agreeing with Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) or the major bank bailouts, and wanting to repeal the Federal Railroad Administration's Quiet Zone Act while serving on Southaven's home owner association board. For three years Tara was involved with the local city council meetings, and recently she lobbied at the Indiana Statehouse for teachers and unions rights. In 2008 Tara rallied at the nation's Capitol Building against the Wall Street Bailout.
She believes that she can make better decisions in Washington D.C. to better represent the constituents in District 4.
